This question comes up on a daily basis at The Pink Painter.
A common home design in the Calgary area has the garage attached to the home. It is a very large square in the front of the house. It can greatly impact the curb appeal. Done right, it can add value. Done wrong, it can detract from the beauty of your most valuable asset.
So, what colour do I paint it? Unfortunately, the answer is “it depends”. There are several factors to consider when determining the colour of your garage door. Do you want it to stand out? Do you want it to blend in? Is the door fancy and worth making a statement or should it try to be hidden because it is plain? What colour is my trim/windows/roof? All these questions can help determine what look you want to achieve and will help you in your decision.
Painting the door the colour of the main body of the house, will hide the door. Painting it the same colour as the trim will make it more dominant. Painting it the colour of the window frames and gutters will make it an accent. Dark colours tend to recede and lighter colours tend to stand out.
One rule of thumb is to take a colour that is already on your house and match the door to that colour. For example, if you have white trim on your windows, doors and gutters, you could paint it white. If you have grey on your trim, eaves and fascia, you could paint it grey.
The combinations are endless. One way to help visualize your home is to use the Sherwin Williams visualizer. There, you can upload a picture of your house and paint the door any colour you want and see what your house would look like with the colour you choose. You can also paint the rest of your house and get a good idea what it would look like with a fresh new look. One word of caution, colours on the computer do not always look the same in real life. It is always a good idea to get a colour chip from the paint store to confirm that your computer generated picture is what you want.
